July 27
Bruce and I are headed to the 1000 Islands to visit
friends and see the sights. Even though
we both lived here for years, we never had a chance to do this before.
There were two choices of routes for our trip – the scenic Seaway
Trail or the boring Thruway
to I-81. I thought it would be nice to
take the scenic route. Bruce wanted the
other but agreed to the other. He set “Betsey”
(the GPS) to guide us on our way. I had
a good map and can always use my phone, except my phone doesn’t know that we
are an RV and the GPS does. It makes a
big difference in directions if you have to make a U-turn or you have an
overpass that is not big enough for you to go under.
To make a long, heated, story a tad shorter, let’s
just say that just about everything bad that could happen, did!
We missed our turn which caused Bruce to get off at the next
one; turning left too fast caused my kitchen appliances (which had never, ever
moved before) to slide off the counter causing the glass coffee pot to break; I
got up and went to the back to try to clean up because we didn’t want Zoey to
step in the broken glass; after being in the back for a while, Bruce yelled
that he had no idea where he was; I went to get up off the floor to go back up
front; he braked too hard; I was almost standing up when he did so; I fell and
cracked my forehead into the floor, bent my glasses and cut my nose, and was
laying on the glass. No, it doesn’t stop
here!
I got back up front and discovered that Bruce was traveling
down Lyell Avenue (not the
best section of town) the wrong way – we were headed right into the city of
Rochester. I used my phone to get
directions and we started to find our way until up ahead I see an overpass that
is only 12 ft. 6 in. while we are 13 ft.
I yelled “Stop” and thank heavens there was a place on our left that
Bruce could swing into to turn around. We
were right by the Sahlen
stadium.

| You can see the overpass at the bottom of the picture and the parking lot where we turned around just in time! |
We parked, cleaned up the back, put ice on my aching head,
recalculated our route, and took off once again. We still ended up going through a major part
of the city (with everyone looking at us as we drove by!!) and eventually got
onto the road we wanted.
Yes, it was scenic.
Will we take scenic again?
NO! Bruce will be choosing the
routes from now on!!
