As we
passed through Virginia into Maryland, I saw the road sign pointing the way to
the Assateague Island National Seashore.
I had my heart set on going there to see the wild ponies, but we will
have to leave that for another trip.
The plan
was to go up through the states of Delaware, Maryland, and Pennsylvania, scooting
around the bigger cities, and head north to Rochester. About the time we passed into Maryland, I
received an email from a high school classmate, Carol, who lives with her
husband Bob in Maryland near Delaware.
She wanted to know where we were and how we were making out. I told her about the leak, about our quest to
head north to Rochester, and what routes we were planning on using.
She advised
us not to go the way that we were planning due to road closures and heavy
construction. To make a long story short
(with lots of emails and texts flying back and forth!), we ended up meeting her
and Bob for a late lunch at Applebee’s in Middletown. They insisted we should stay the night at
their house and “camp” in their driveway.
Since it was late and we had no reservations anywhere (plus we needed to
“catch up” some more), we took them up on their offer. And ended staying two nights instead of
one!! We had a super time getting caught
up on each other’s lives for the past 40+ years. We had chatted at our class reunion five
years ago, but you never really get a chance to talk at those events.
Carol and
Bob have a beautiful home on the Sassafras River. Their boys, Robbie and Paul and daughter Kelly and families are
close by. We really enjoyed the use of
their pool as the humidity was well over 75 percent with high temperatures. We also got to go for a boat ride which
cooled us off a bit. Bob restores old
cars and will be taking several to the Meacham car auction this summer. Carol keeps busy with the grandkids and loves
shopping for antiques. Their home is
filled with exquisite, one-of-a-kind pieces.
The “before” me would have drooled and envied; the “new” me (“no more
stuff”) just admired!

Our visit
ended too soon but not before I managed to fall down the short set of stairs in
the garage. Nothing broken, just some
bruises and aches. We departed on the
morning of the fourth of July and headed for New York State. We were lucky that Carol had taken the time
to write up directions for us. We needed
them as we traveled non-interstate roads through Pennsylvania.
