"One Day at a Time, 2015” ….. South Carolina (again) ….. (December 14 - 21) ….. Charleston, SC
December 17 - Beaufort
We have been like two slugs around here; I think we are having separation anxiety from our family. We miss them, and the fun we had!!
We finally ventured out of the RV to the nearby town of Beaufort. I still haven't learned how to pronounce it correctly; don't know if it is Beau (like a suitor) or Beau (like a bow), or Beau (bew like ???). Either way, it was fun. (I just heard it on the news; It's the latter.)
I had discovered that the The Kazoobie Kazoo Factory was located in this small town, and they give tours! So, Bruce dropped me off (yes, you read that right! He didn't want to go with me!), and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and recommend it to anyone of any age. At the end, I got to make my own kazoo!!

The machine that makes the wax-membrane. It is fixed around the edges by a circular cylinder-ring and is free to oscillate. When they come out of the press, the operator must separate them by hand.

| The machine shown here was imprinting the Kazoo. Many companies buy hundreds/thousands of these as give-aways, etc. |

I must tell you a story about one of the reasons why I really wanted to take this tour. When I started my professional career at Sandia National Laboratories, I was hired by a retired Air Force colonel who presented each new staff member with a kazoo. We were all expected to play Christmas Carols and Happy Birthday on the kazoo sometimes right out in public restaurants! Here's to you Gary! I wish I knew your email so I could tell you about this place. (And Gina, and Claire, and Marsha!!)
We continued on our journey to see the "lay of the land" and drove out to Hunting Island State Park. As you can see, it was not a very nice day.
We kept driving until we were forced to turn around by the security guard who announced to us that Fripp Island was a "private" island and we could not continue. Yes, sir!

This was the only picture I could (quickly) take as Bruce did a U-turn and we proceeded back across the bridge. It looked like a clubhouse.

| St. Helena Island, Gay Fish Company Ruby Godley from Beaufort watched several scenes being filmed including those on Lucy Creek. She recalls, "All of the shrimp from Forrest's hurricane shrimping trip were bought from Gay Seafood Company on St. Helena Island. Bob and Hilda Gay Upton's shrimp boat 'Miss Hilda' can be seen tied up at the dock in the film while Forrest is naming his boat 'Jenny'. Bubba also mentions shrimp burgers when listing all the ways to cook shrimp. Shrimp burgers from Bob and Hilda's Shrimp Shack were a favorite of Tom Hanks and the crew during filming." |
You can read about some of the other SC towns/cities/places where scenes from the same movie can be found here.
