"One Day at a Time, 2015” ..... Canada ..... (July 16th - August 19th) ….. July 29, 30, 31

July 29th – Day 14 – 254 Google KM – Travel Day

As we left our campground on Wednesday, we passed by the turn-off for Le Village historique acadien de la Nouvelle-Écosse.  We had hoped to be able to go here, but we just ran out of time.  On the way, though, Bruce did get to see a Salt Haystack, something that we had discussed.  Neither one of us knew what it was until I looked it up.

We also had been told to see the village of Shelburne but Bruce took one look at the size of the road through the village and we got back on Trans Canada Highway 103.

We arrived at Hubbard’s Beach Campground & Cottages only to find that they did NOT have a reservation for us for the 4 nights I had asked for; only 3.  That left us high and dry for Saturday, August 1st which turned out to be a Civic Holiday, a Canadian Holiday …. And next to impossible to find a CG.  We left messages at several nearby CG’s and felt a little better when we discovered that there was a Walmart nearby.

After dinner we decided to take a ride – what’s new?  We headed to the Aspotogan Peninsula Loop, Route 329. Here is another link.

I had not had a chance to read up on where we were going or what we were seeing; we were just taking a ride.  Along the way I noticed signs for the memorial site for Swissair Flight 111.  When we got back to the RV, I googled it and discovered there had been a horrific crash in September of
1998.  We did not stop at the memorial; I wish we had.  I had hoped to go back, but as usual, we ran out of time.

We did discover a little cove where a family was fishing and the sights were just breathtaking.  I think it might have been Southwest Cove .  Regardless of the name, my pictures hardly do it justice.

July 30th – Day 15 - Halifax, WalMart and Batteries

Realizing that our household batteries were not holding their charge, which we would need if we had no electric, Bruce went on a quest to find new ones.  We checked with Costco and WalMart near the city of Halifax but they either didn’t have enough of one kind or had the wrong size.  The folks at WalMart were nice enough to send us to Fraserway RV in Bedford, NS.  They had what we wanted and after a little dickering, the price was right.  Plus, one of the perks to this Canadian trip was the fact that our dollar was worth 30% more than the Canadian dollar so while the price on the receipt was over $768.20, we actually only paid 593.60!

Reading the brochures for Halifax I discovered that we were finally in the right place at the right time to take in a festival!  The Halifax International Buskers Festival was held at the Halifax Harbourwalk.  We decided to walk the walk and see if the magicians, comedians, musicians, contortionists and comedians could make us laugh.  I especially enjoyed the puppeteer!  We walked from one end of the pier where the Casino Nova Scotia is located almost to the other before we had to call it a day.  I was hoping we would have time to take in the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 but we just ran out of time!

Back at Hubbards Beach CG, Bruce, Zoey and I took a walk down to the beach.  Everyone had left for the day (except for one young man and his dad), and it was quite soothing to listen to the waves lap the shore.

July 31st – Day 16 - Hubbards, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg, The Shore House

We started out early on our ride since we planned on dinner out tonight.  We investigated the village of Hubbards and then drove to Mahone Bay.  (Here is another link.)  Oh, my, how picturesque and quaint.  The pictures don’t do it justice.  I did get a nice shot of the Three Churches – an iconic image frequently photographed and featured on postcards and calendars.

 {Three Churches of Mahone Bay: Three churches dominate the waterfront in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. The left church is the Victorian-style St. James Anglican Church built in 1885 still retains its original colors, St. John's Lutheran Church was built in 1869 and Trinity United Church on the right was built in 1861 and moved to its present location in 1885. It had a steeple, but it was removed in after being damaged by a storm.}

Then we drove to Lunenburg.  Everyone had told us to be sure and visit here.  Actually, we were more impressed with Mahone Bay.  But Lunenburg had some beautiful scenery as well. (Additional Wiki link here.)

As you can see, Hubbards is know for it's Tuna Flat Races.

Near the Yacht Club and cove.

On the approach to Mahone Bay, one of the first things you see are the three churches.

For more pictures of Mahone Bay, please click here.  These are much better than I can do!

For more pictures of Lunenburg, please click here.  They are much better than mine!  Bruce must have gone around the same square at least 3 - 4 times so I could get pictures!!

The Shore Club - the last of the great dance clubs and home to the Original Lobster supper!!  And we were just steps away from the front door!!
