August 6– 8, Days 22, 23, 24
Our last few days here flew by. One day we decided to take a ride down the Trans
Canada Highway almost to the town of Whycocomagh. Instead we turned onto route 223 which took
us to the LittleNarrows ferry. We boarded the boat and departed on the other
side. A short distance later we came to
Iona where the Highland
Village Museum, a part of the Nova Scotia museum. This museum overlooks the stunning Bras
d’Or Lake. Employees dressed in period costumes introduce you
to the culture and habits of the era that they represent. We enjoyed our stay there.
As you can see, we finally lucked out with a beautiful day!
This set of twins and their brother were enjoying the farm animals.
A Hearse
Bruce could not figure out what this piece of farm equipment was for. Do you know?

Excuse my finger but the lake and the clouds were so pretty.
We decided we could not leave the area without attending a ceilidh, a gathering of people that usually
involves folk music and dancing. We were
fortunate that the town of Baddeck featured one every evening at 7:30 p.m. at St. Michael’s Parish Hall. We weren’t sure what to expect but since we
both enjoy all kinds of music, we figured we’d like it. And we did!
Another day we took a ride and came upon some pretty
scenery. The small towns also had very
colorful painted signs.
Now, talk about coincidences. Of all the RV parks on Cape Breton Island,
who should appear in ours just before we are ready to leave but our friends
Dirk, Caroline, Rebecca and Florian from Frankfurt. (We had met them at Wayside Park near Peggy’s
Cove). We had the best time exchanging
stories about where we each had been, what we had seen and where we were going. I knew from a previous conversation that the
kids had never experienced a S’More. I
wanted to surprise them with the treat.
The area supermarket had the marshmallows and graham crackers I needed
but the Hershey bars were non-existent.
I had a stock boy scrounge around the store and we managed to find some
Cadbury chocolate instead. Caroline
couldn’t have any since she is gluten-intolerant, but Dirk and the kids enjoyed
them!
There was so much to see and do and we barely scratched the surface. Here is a another link to Baddeck and information about the Wagmatcook Culture.
