We’re Off!!

July 16th, Day 1 – 202 Google Miles

Betsy (our GPS) started us off on the wrong foot!  She mapped us way out of our way to catch the Wellesley Island / 1000 Island Bridge, and we followed her!  Off to a later start than we wanted.  Great way to start the adventure!  Hope it’s not an omen.

I was really leery about crossing the border.  We had heard all kinds of stories from fellow RV’ers about it (they searched every inch of their RV’s; they confiscated some of their food, etc.)  We didn’t know what to expect, but it was a piece of cake.  All she asked for was our passports, where were we going, did we have any campfire wood, and whether or not we had any liquor (check, Sainte Madeleine, no, two 750 ml).  Our goal today was to get to Camping Sainte Madeleine in Sainte-Madeleine, QC.  After spending $9.25 on toll roads and eating dry cereal, apples, nuts and yogurt for dinner (it worked for us!), we arrived a bit later than we like to.  This is a “one-nighter.”  We watched the Pan Am games on television in French and hit the sack!

As we traveled through Canada and I took thousands of pictures and I'm writing this almost two months later, please keep in mind that I don't know what all the picture are of.  It was a beautiful trip, and I encourage everyone to try and see the Maritimes.

We decided to by-pass Montreal and go right to Quebec.

July 17th, Day 2 –216 Google KMs

As we were driving to Levis, QC, I noticed that most of the cars we have seen on the highway are dark in color; not many bright colors, so that when a lime green car goes by, you really notice it.  Arrived at Camping Transit, Levis, QC in good time and got set up.  We have W/E/S (water, electric, sewer) and 50 amp electric which is going to be a rarity up here.  Most of the CGs are 30.  This will be a 4-day stop.

This is seventeen-year old Victor, son of the owners.  He babysat Zoey for us while we toured Quebec.  He is ambitious and has exciting plans for his future; no slouch when it comes to working to help his parents out.

This is Victor's older brother Tristan who wasn't there until the last day and the "mom".  I didn't catch her name.  She spoke mostly French.  Ruk (Rock), the dad and father, skipped out of getting his picture taken.  They have only owned the park two years and are making improvements daily.  I highly recommend this place.

July 18th, Day 3

It rained on and off all day so we went to WalMart and Costco to replenish our pantry since we have no idea where stores are and what we will find ahead of us.  Ya gotta eat!!  While we were eating our $1.50 hot dog at Costco, we noticed people eating what looked like French Fries with gravy and white blobs of something over the top.  We had no idea what it was but found out later.  Did some laundry and planned our excursion into Quebec City the next day.  Took a ride down to Old Levi's (Vieux-Levis).  We parked down by the water and walked, and walked, and walked; discovered we were lost and couldn't find the car!

Fresco Caisse de Lévis is located at 9, rue Mgr Gosselin, on the west wall of the gymnasium of the Collège de Lévis in the heart of the districtDesjardins.

One of the few French words I know:  Library!!  How fitting!!

Victor had told me about an ice cream shoppe (Chocolate Favoris) that dips their ice cream in different flavors of chocolate.  Of course I was able to give directions to Bruce for that!

July 19th, Day 3

This campground really caters to its campers.  They provide a shuttle down to the Ferry that will take us over to Quebec City so we don’t have to take our own car.  We had a little trouble at the ferry entrance since the tickets we bought at the campground for the tour did not include the ferry ride and the gentlemen selling the tickets didn't speak English, but Richard, Julia and their son Julian (who speak French and English) were able to help us out.  They live in Florida but try to vacation in Canada every year.  They gave us some pointers on what to see that were helpful.  They are staying at Camping Transit, also.

We decided on a combination Walk-On, Walk-Off tour of the city in a red double-decker bus with a break for lunch and an afternoon cruise on the AML Louis Jolliet of the St. Lawrence River.  It was a great tour, we never did get wet even on the top level of the bus, and we had an exceptional tour guide.  We never would have known what to see, and this gave us the opportunity to see a bit of it all.

Painted on the side of a building

This piece of artwork stretched down in the alleyway.  This next picture shows what it looked like looking up instead of down.  Looked like colored plastic.

We shared this pastry.  Maple on the top.  Can't remember what it's called.

(Some of the buildings/places that we saw:

Place Royal; Basilique Cathedrale; Parliament; Battlefields Park; Statue of Joan of Arc; Upper Town (Haute-Ville); Lower Town (Basse-Ville); Old Port (Vieux-Port); Fortification; Parc des Champs-de Bataille.)
