"One Day at a Time, 2015” ….. Gordonsville, Virginia …..(November 6 - November 9) ..... Travel Day/Set Up

November 6  Travel Day/Set Up at Shenendoah Crossing RV Resort

We had purchased a 2016 Truckers Atlas on the advice of our friends Cindy and Rob.  It shows all the roads that trucks DO go on and the roads that they CAN'T go on.  As I mentioned previously, I like to get us off of the interstates occasionally so that we see the countryside and not just other RVs, cars and trucks.  So I plotted our route across West Virginia.  It is not an easy state to cross; full of those mountains, you know.

Our plan was to leave Clarksburg (upper left near Harrison county), travel south on I-79 and then take route 33 across the state.  The route was orange on the atlas signifying that the truckers took this route.  It was that or go out of our way to the north or south.

It was an interesting ride to say the least!  At times, I couldn't look down out my window because it was too scary.  Shear drop off!  Skinny roads! But real pretty scenery.

Those are marks on the window, not your computer screen.

7% Grade in a 42-ft RV towing a car = hang on!

Germany Valley

Seneca Rocks

Friends Run Church

I noticed that the church dinners around this area are not exactly like the ones we went to in New York state.  Those were Chicken or Pork BBQ.  Here they seem to serve Buckwheat Pancakes with Sausage.  I saw several of those signs.  Sounded good!

Shenandoah Mountains

Fat Daddies caught my eye

Shenandoah National Park

Knights of the Golden Horseshoe

Town of Gordonsville was having a Veterans Day Parade.
Sometimes Bruce drives too fast or I don't have my camera out and ready to take a picture of some of the things I see.  These links contain information on those as we passed through WV.

Future Generations Graduate School  - this was located on the skinny, mountain road with absolutely nothing around it.  I couldn't see it but did see the sign.

Fort Seybert

Murder of Ambrose Meadows - this sign caught my eye and I made a note of it so I could look up later.

And, just to keep our lives interesting, the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT came on again - several times - as we were climbing the mountains!!!  Pretty harrowing for Bruce when the engine just dies and you are on a skinny mountain road!  There wasn't anything we could do but just hope to keep going.

We arrived at our destination - Shenandoah Crossing Resort and Country Club, and we were impressed.  This is the nicest CG we have ever been in.  They provide concrete pads, outside tables and chairs with umbrellas, outdoor grills AND a pair of tongs/flippers, etc. to cook with, and some deluxe sites have a outdoor kitchen and some super deluxe have a hot tub!!!  We spent $0.00 to stay there since it was part of the Coast to Coast family.

The following video I took off of  the internet:

Checked in around 3:30, got set up and just sat and enjoyed a beer.  We had been advised to check in sometime before 11 p.m. so we went up to the lodge after dinner.  As we were checking in, we were asked if we were interested in attending the preview of the resort regarding membership etc. When they said we could get a $150.00 Master Card just to sit and listen to the spiel, we decided to do it.  This time we KNEW we would say "no" since we already have one membership (in the west where it makes sense) and we didn't need another.  We were polite, attentive, asked some questions, and eventually said "no."  There was a bit of pressure involved and it took far longer than 1 hour, but since it was raining and we had no other plans, we didn't mind.  So now we have a card to use for "fun" stuff!
