August 18 – Day 34    - Our last full day in PEI

Since Zoey was feeling so good, and because we still hadn’t gotten to see the beaches at Cavendish, we decided to take her with us and get in some more sightseeing.  This was our last full day in PEI and we still had so much to see!

We started out by using our favorite route 2 to take us to Cavendish.  It seemed to us that whenever anyone talked to us about PEI, Cavendish or the Green Gables shore, touristy and Anne of Green Gables came up.  I hate to admit it but I knew nothing about Lucy Maud Montgomery and her famous stories but do plan to read them after being here.  While we were eager to see the beaches at Cavendish, we really had no plans to do the Anne of Green Gables sightseeing stuff; we were more interested in the drive along the Prince Edward Island Park.

We arrived at the park and discovered in order to take the drive, one had to pay.  So we paid, stopped, drove, ate our PB&J sandwiches, and drove some more to NorthRustico and its harbor.  We had just as much fun here and it didn’t cost a dime!   We saw two lighthouses, people kayaking, boats going out to the St. Laurence, a quaint little tourist shopthe harbor and cute houses.

We saw these quirky sites (an airplane and a geodesic dome just before we got to Cavendish.  Not sure what they were.

While searching the web just now trying to find out what I took a picture of, I came upon this most interesting site - ABC listing of large Canadian Roadside Attractions.  Now why couldn't I find that before we left the US?

North Rustico

I couldn't figure out where the second lighthouse was until we left.  As we left the parking lot, I noticed it by the Seagulls Nest shoppe.  It is now an ice cream stand.

**Excerpt from tourism book about Anne of Green Gables:
“So well-loved is Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables that she has had many incarnations since being introduced in 1908.  Montgomery herself wrote nine Anne novels and two others in which Anne makes an appearance.  Montgomery’s original has been adapted for the TV and film screen at least six times.  A Japanese animated TV series and three sequels to the original have been produced for Canadian television.  It has also been mounted for the stage.  Anne of Green Gables, presented by the Confederation Centre of the Arts, is Canada’s longest-running musical.  Anne & Gilbert, the newest Anne stage musical, is now presented at The Guild in Charlottetown.”
