September 1 - Cape Cod
We are going to Cape Cod today!! We should have gotten an earlier start, but
we just don’t get up early anymore – love it!!
And we will be taking Zoey with us as she seems to be much, much better.
We stopped at the Plymouth Harbor Visitor Center to get some
pamphlets, maps and advice. The advice
was to stay off of the main road going through the middle of the island and
take route 6A. “Back in the early days,
settlers did not covet waterfront property as we do today. Wealthy merchants & sea captains erected
stately homes along Old King’s Highway (6A), not along the shoreline. Through preservation efforts and strict town
codes, hundreds of these historical treasures grace this route today along with
lovely shops & restaurants. Although
this narrow and winding way has long been paved, it retains all the dignity,
beauty and peace of days gone by. It
winds approximately 34 miles from Bourne to Orleans and is ranked among the top
scenic byways in the country.”
I did not realize that the bridge we were crossing to get to the Cape (Bourne bridge) took us over an artificial waterway connecting Cape Cod Bay in the north to Buzzards Bay in the south.

Our first stop was in Sandwich, and because I kept us there
so long, we had to abandon the idea of driving 6A to Provincetown! Oh well! In Sandwich, the oldest incorporated town, we
stopped near the Dexter Grist Mill – clearly by accident – but reaped the
benefit of filling our empty water jugs from the Artesian fountain nearby. I had read that it’s said to offer the best
water on the cape. I didn’t think too
much about it until I saw several cars pull up nearby, get their jugs out, and
fill them up. We drove by the Hoxie
House and also the Sandwich Glass Museum.

Unfortunately didn't have time to stop at The Heritage Museums & Gardens but I clicked a picture of the sign to remind myself that I must go back!

The man who was getting all the water ahead of us in line had an interesting passenger in his truck!

Why did Jean take a picture of the garbage can? I thought it was interesting that it was solar compacting inside after you dropped in your trash. The BigBelly!
We made one stop along the way near Nausett Beach. We stopped at the Cape Cod National Seashorevisitor center to inquire about taking a road right along beach to
Provincetown, but they said there was no such road. We also discovered that one has to pay to go
to each and every beach on the island.
We refused to pay $5.00 or even $10.00 to just see the beach. We were no going in swimming and not
picnicking as we had already eaten our PB&J sandwiches.
In Provincetown, we drove to Race Point Beach and Lighthouse
but did not stop. We refuse to pay $5 or $10 to park to walk on the beach! We drove through the
outskirts of the town proper; it was swarming with people, dogs, people
walking, people on bikes, cars, etc. We
had no desire to fight crowds or see shops and restaurants so we started
back. We alternated between using 6A and
6 all the way back to the bridge.

Neat to see the huge sand dune piles by the roadside.

I tried to get a picture of Marilyn Monroe painted on this garage. Click on the link here to see it better.
All of the cottages/condos/etc. pictured above were on the cape leaving Provincetown. There were miles and miles of them. Doesn't look like a very restful place to vacation, does it?
