Miles - Travel Day
We were up really early so we could master Boston. Why does Boston scare me so much? Back when our girls were in high school, one
summer vacation we rented a small Class C RV and planned a trip to the New
England states – including Boston. I
remember it like it was yesterday …. We were driving into the city on one of
the interstates, and I saw a sign that said, “no propane in tunnels.” I
panicked because I knew that we had propane aboard. I told Bruce that we had to get off so he
did. And we were immediately lost,
traveling in circles around Chinatown (This was during the “Big Dig.”). I think we went by the same stores and
restaurants at least three times.
Finally between my navigating and Bruce’s excellent driving, we found
our way out and heading north. The kids
and I were disappointed, but Bruce said if I wanted to drive, we could go
back. No way!! That’s why I fear Boston.
We spent a good part of the two days at Old Orchard Beach
going over maps of the city. We realized
that we didn’t have the best paper map but we figured between the Rand McNally
GPS and my phone, we could do it. I told
Bruce , “You’re driving so you pick the route” – either right through the city
on I-93, I-93 to 128 to 1, or I-496 – an outer loop. He decided that I-495 was out too far, and
since we had gotten such an early start, we would go right through the city. We have mastered cities before!
Well, can you guess the outcome? We were tooling along, doing real good, until
I read, “No E-Z passes permitted on bridge ahead.” Oh no, déjà vu! We don’t have an E-Z pass; up until this
point we had been paying cash.*** We bailed! Now, can you imagine a 42 ft. RV towing an
Acura making its way along the street of Boston? I could go into great detail here, telling
you where we went, where we thought we were, what went wrong, etc., but it
would bore you! I will tell you that we
eventually (hours, not minutes)
found our way out of the city and back on I-93 headed to Plymouth.
We arrived at the Pinewood Lodge CG only to find that our
reservation had gotten messed up. (Are
you feeling our frustration by now?) I
had had a bad feeling about this one and had called the night before. I was assured that everything was okay. Right!! Thank heavens for us they did some
shuffling around, we agreed to move three times, and we finally parked. We unhitched the car and immediately went
looking for the closest veterinarian or hospital for Zoey.
After seeing her at the Plymouth Animal Hospital and Pet
Resort (!!), they recommended that we take her to the VCA Specialty Animal
Hospital in South Shore (Weymouth). We
took her immediately, and after consultation, we agreed to have her
admitted. We said to each other, “this
is the last time.” I will tell you that
I have taken two other dogs to the vet to have “put down” because of their
misery; I knew that it was time for them; it felt right. Well, both Bruce and I just didn’t feel it
was time for Zoey. Granted, we didn’t like
spending this much money, but we just knew it wasn’t her time. We just knew!!
We left Zoey and returned to our RV and just pooped out!
