September 10 – Our first ride to see the Lay of the Land

Because we arrived so early yesterday, we actually had a chance to study and look at some of the material that we picked up on our way into the state so we would know what we wanted to see.  Bruce had talked about going to a museum of some kind.  I found a town that I wanted him to take me to.  I didn't tell him why; it was going to be a surprise.  

So we set out for Williamantic. As usual, Bruce drove, and as we got close to the town, I told him what we were looking for.  And then we came upon it ....

the bridge with the Frogs!! I had discovered this in a web site that I love to reference now and again - Roadside America.  I also discovered an article in one of the tourist magazines (make sure you read the comments section on this one) we had picked up.  

Without further ado, here are the frogs!

They are a little scary looking!

And here is a spool.


The spools symbolize Willimantic’s historic importance as a thread production center, and several former mill buildings (since converted to other uses) can be seen from the bridge’s sidewalks.






And this guy sits across the site of the mill.  This is a shoe store.  Not too sure about why the frog is out front; it doesn't even have shoes on!
